Open Banking: The Quiet Rewiring of Financial Infrastructure

Open Banking has moved from regulatory buzzword to operational reality. Across India's Account Aggregator framework, the United Kingdom's Open Banking regime, PSD2 in Europe, and the Consumer Data Right in Australia, the underlying principle is the same: financial data belongs to the customer, and with their explicit consent, it should move securely between institutions in structured, standardized formats.
The change is quieter than the hype suggested, but it's more fundamental. The plumbing of financial services is being rewired, one API at a time.
From Screen Scraping to Structured Consent
For most of the last decade, applications that needed access to a customer's bank data got it through screen scraping — a fragile arrangement in which the customer handed over their online banking credentials and a bot logged in on their behalf. It worked, in the sense that it produced data. It failed on almost every other dimension: it broke every time a bank redesigned its login page, it exposed credentials to third parties, and it gave no visibility to the customer about who was accessing their data or why.
Open Banking replaces that entire arrangement with something structurally different: a consent artifact issued by the customer, honored by their bank, and consumed by a third party through a standardized API. The credentials never leave the bank. The customer sees exactly what data will be shared, for how long, and can revoke access at any time.
What Open Banking Actually Delivers
At its most useful, Open Banking delivers three things: standardized data models, consent-driven access, and predictable API contracts. A lender can pull twelve months of transaction history to make a credit decision. A treasury platform can aggregate balances across every bank a corporate uses. A personal finance app can categorize spend without ever seeing the customer's password.
What ties these use cases together is that the customer is in charge. Every access is scoped, time-bound, and auditable — a design principle that makes both regulators and customers more comfortable than the alternative ever did.
The Integration Reality
The promise of Open Banking APIs is standardization. The reality is more nuanced. Even within a single jurisdiction, banks implement the standards with subtle differences — in field naming, in error handling, in rate limits, in how they represent things like joint accounts or foreign currency balances.
This is where a well-designed integration layer earns its keep. Instead of every fintech, lender, and enterprise having to solve the same normalization problem for each bank they connect to, a shared layer absorbs the differences and presents a consistent interface upstream.
Use Cases That Are Working Today
Lending is the leading use case in most Open Banking markets. Instead of relying solely on bureau scores and self-reported income, lenders can look at actual transaction patterns — salary credits, discretionary spend, recurring liabilities, and cash flow volatility. The result is faster, more accurate, and often more inclusive credit decisions.
Beyond lending, the growing categories include cash flow forecasting for small businesses, personal finance and wealth aggregation, insurance underwriting, and consent-driven payment initiation. Each of these use cases was theoretically possible before Open Banking. What's changed is the cost, speed, and reliability of doing it.
What to Look for in an Open Banking Partner
The build-versus-buy question in Open Banking almost always resolves in favor of buy. The infrastructure — bank connectivity, consent orchestration, normalization, monitoring, jurisdictional compliance — is deep, and it's not the differentiator for most businesses. The differentiator is what you do with the data once you have it.
